Does the pool only leak, or leak more, when the equipment is ON?This,
typically, will be the cause of a pressure side leak (plumbing from
the equipment to the pool). With the pump circulating, the plumbing on
the pressure side is under pressure, thus forcing the water out of the
leak. This can turn a pinhole leak into a steady stream.
Does the pool only leak, or leak more, when the equipment is turned OFF?This,
often times, will be the cause of a suction side leak (skimmer, main
drain, vac line). With the pump on, the plumbing on the suction side is
under negative pressure. Air will often be drawn through the leak until
the line or pump is shut off. If the suction side leak is bad enough
it will continue to leak as the pump is on but may be slowed down. You
may notice some air in the pump basket or air bubbles coming out of the
return lines.
Does the pool leak equal amounts with the pump ON and OFF?This
doesn't rule out plumbing leaks but does indicate that the pool's
structure may be the culprit. It could be a hole in the liner, crack in
plaster, lights, skimmers, main drains, etc...
We'll often ask
you if you notice it leaking more under any of these circumstances. It
enables us to show up on site with a game plan and attack the problem
areas first. We may start by diving the pool or pressure testing lines
depending on the results.
